Join KFP for virtual Folkstreams Watch Parties! This fall, we’re streaming four independent documentaries about traditional culture in Kentucky and around the South. After each showing on Facebook Live, we’ll be joined by a guest scholar or filmmaker to further discuss the films and the traditions they portray. Schedule: Oct. 8: Bill Monroe (1993), dir. Join us TOMORROW Oct. 8 at 6:00pm CT on Facebook Live for the first KFP Folkstreams Watch Party! We’ll be streaming the 1993 documentary Bill Monroe: Father of Bluegrass. And stay tuned after the film for a conversation with folklorist and Kentucky music expert Dr. Erika Brady. No single figure in American music so dominated a genre as Bill Monroe did bluegrass. This film stands alone as the most intimate and detailed portrait of the unique musical innovator, creating an experience akin to having a one-on-one conversation with the bluegrass master. Join us this Thursday at 6:00pm CT on Facebook Live for another KFP Folkstreams watch party! This week, we’re streaming the 1987 documentary film Talking Feet, by director Mike Seeger. Stay tuned after the film for a conversation with Dr. Susan Spalding, dance ethnologist and author of the book Appalachian Dance: Creativity and Continuity in Six Communities. Talking Feet is the first documentary to feature flatfoot, buck, hoedown, and rural tap dancing, the styles of solo Southern dancing which are a companion to traditional old-time music and on which modern clog dancing is based. It features 24 traditional dancers videotaped on location in Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, and North Carolina. Film shared in partnership with Folkstreams. Need a break from watching the news? Tune in tomorrow, Nov. 5, at 6pm CT for another KFP Folkstreams Watch Party on Facebook Live! This week, we’re streaming the 2008 documentary film Burgoo. Stay tuned after the film for a conversation with two of the filmmakers, Stan Woodward and Jay Williams. From the pioneer days of the Kentucky frontier comes a stew prepared by farmers and hunters. They called it Burgoo. This film comes from Stan Woodward’s suite of documentaries about Southern agrarian communal stews, all cooked on open fires in huge black iron pots, by stew masters and their crews, using folk heritage recipes with secret ingredients, and sold as fundraisers for local community organizations.
